Protocols to Deepen Understanding

Reading professional articles can spark critical thinking, inspire innovation, and elevate our instructional practice but the real power comes from how we engage with what we read. Using structured protocols creates space for deep reflection, collaboration, and meaningful dialogue.

Below are three impactful protocols from the School Reform Initiative designed to help educators engage with articles in ways that promote thoughtful conversation and actionable insights.

Protocols to Guide Your Article Discussions

Four A’s Protocol

Purpose: Analyze an article by examining four key lenses: what you Agree with, what you want to Argue, what you want to Aspire to, and what aspect you want to Ask a question about.

  • Best for: Diving into complex ideas or articles with multiple perspectives.
  • Why use it: Encourages balanced critique and thoughtful reflection.

Chalk Talk

Purpose: A silent conversation protocol that allows participants to reflect and respond to an article or big ideas using written dialogue on chart paper or digital platforms.

  • Best for: Encouraging participation from all voices, especially introverts.
  • Why use it: Promotes reflection, creativity, and deeper questioning without verbal discussion.

Save the Last Word for Me

Purpose: A powerful listening protocol where participants choose a quote from an article, listen to others reflect on it, and then share their own thoughts last.

  • Best for: Articles with rich or provocative quotes and ideas.
  • Why use it: Builds active listening, patience, and deeper understanding of multiple interpretations.

Tips for Using Protocols with Articles
